JFW 3.31 ReadMe.txt
Last Modified: 9/30/99, ed

For a detailed list of new features in 3.31, please
refer to What's New, found in the Help menu of the
Main JAWS Window.

The purpose of this file is to direct you towards
several areas of interest. It is divided into the
following sections:

A. Folders Contained on this CD
    1. JFW33 Folders
    2. JFW20 Folders
    3. MSIE50 Folder
    4. MSSpeech Folder
B. Talking Installation with Advanced Diagnostics
C. JFW Help
D. Potential Problems and Suggestions

A. Folders Contained on this CD
This CD contains Install files for JFW 3.31,
JFW 2.00.29, MSIE 5.0, and the Microsoft
    Text-to-Speak Engine.
    1. JFW331 Folders
The JFW331 folder contains three subfolders,
        called FLOPPIES, ALLFILES, and SETUP.

FLOPPIES Folder contains disk images of disks
1 through 12. Copy these to floppy disks to use.
Please note that these disks do not present a
runnable object. They must be copied to a temp
folder on the system on which they are to be
installed. Then run the SETUP.EXE program to
install JFW 3.31 directly from the temp folder.

ALLFILES Folder contains all the files used
elsewhere in the install for JFW 3.31, but none
        of the files are compressed.

SETUP Folder contains the files to install
JFW 3.31. Run the SETUP.EXE program contained
in this folder to install JFW.

    2. JFW20 Folders
The JFW20 folder contains three subfolders named
FLOPPIES, ALLFILES, and SETUP. Note that JFW 2.0
is provided on this CD since it is the last version
of JFW produced that will install and run with
        Windows 3.1.

FLOPPIES Folder contains disk images of disk1,
        disk2, disk3, disk4, and disk5. Copy these images
to floppy disks to use. Then insert disk1 and run
INSTALL.EXE or SETUP.EXE to install JFW.

ALLFILES Folder contains all of the files used
elsewhere in the install for JFW 2.00.29, but none
        of the files are compressed.

SETUP Folder contains the files that can be copied
to a subfolder to install JFW 2.0. Take note that
JFW 2.0 cannot be installed directly from the CD.

    3. MSIE50 Folder

The MSIE50 folder contains the Microsoft Internet
Explorer Browser, version 5.0. Internet Explorer
is a Microsoft product and has been provided on
the JFW CD as a convenience to our customers who
wish to install it. You should check with your
Internet Service Provider to ensure that they
support the use of IE 5 prior to installing it.

If you would like more detailed information on
installing IE 5, see the Microsoft file IE.txt
contained in the MSIE50 folder of the CD. Please
direct any questions you have concerning the
        install to Microsoft Technical Support.

If you wish to install IE 5 from the JFW CD, run
the IE5SETUP.EXE program in this folder to install
Internet Explorer. Follow the instructions that are
        displayed during the install.

    4.	MSSPEECH Folder

Note: Standard Windows Compatible Sound Card
             Required for Software Synthesizers.

This folder contains the files necessary to install
the Microsoft Speech Engine. This is a software
synthesizer provided by Microsoft that is supported
        by JFW 3.31.

Note: There is an INSTALL.TXT file in this folder
that you need to read before executing either of
the files, as the order is important. In addition
to installing the synthesizer, you also must choose
             Microsoft Text-To-Speech during the installation
of JFW 3.31 from the list of synthesizers if you
intend to use it with JFW.

Finally, you should be aware that Eloquence for JFW
will be installed automatically with JFW so this
synthesizer is not required and is simply another
option we have provided if you choose to use it.

B. Talking Installation with Advanced Diagnostics
For your convenience, a "runtime" version of JFW now
comes up speaking at the beginning and for the duration
of the installation process. An advanced diagnostic
program (Dr. JAWS) will also examine your system for
known problems. When installing from the CD, you can
install without these enhanced features by pressing
SHIFT+ENTER when prompted to proceed with the
installation. If you are installing from a downloaded
version, then you can run JSAFESET.EXE to prepare the
installation to run without these advanced features.
To reverse JSAFESET.EXE and enable these advanced
features type [JSAFESET.EXE /R] in the Run dialog or
    at the command prompt.

C. JFW Help
The JFW 3.31 Help system has been greatly enhanced.
Many of the topics previously contained in the
JFW331\technotes\enu folder are now contained in the
online Help system. You can enter the Help system by
opening the Help menu under the JFW Application window
(INSERT+J) and selecting one of the Help menu items
or to get application-specific Help, press INSERT+F1
twice within a second while in the application. If we
have written JAWS-specific help for that application,
you will taken directly to that file.

The following menu items can be found in the Help menu:

JFW Help Topics - The main JFW Help system. Includes
    application-specific Help files.

Quick Reference - The main keystrokes that can be used
throughout JFW and Windows for Desktop and Laptop layout.

What's New - A list of new features that have been added
    since the previous release.

Customizing JFW - Tips and instructions on how to
customize JFW to meet your individual needs.

Technical Support - Information on how to contact our
    technical support department.

About JAWS for Windows - Current version, serial number,
    SMA details, and copyrights.

Keyboard Help - Keyboard Help has been further enhanced
in JFW 3.31. Keyboard Help allows you to press a key and
preview it without performing its action. To turn on and
off this help mode, press INSERT+1 on the numbers row.
JFW 3.31 allows for maximum keyboard flexibility and as
you make changes to your keyboard layout, Keyboard Help
will update itself so that accurate information is always
    provided.

D. Potential Problems and Suggestions
We have noticed that when using a software synthesizer,
occasionally the volume may drop down very low, so that
it is barely audible. The volume may be restored by
resetting it in the multimedia volume control.
    Follow these steps:
Press CTRL+ESC to open the Start menu.
Press P for Programs. If more than one item begins
with the letter P, then you must press ENTER on the
menu item. Press A for Accessories.
If running Windows 95 or NT, Press M for Multimedia.
If running Windows 98, Press E for Entertainment.
    Press V for Volume Control.
Use the TAB once to move to the system volume slider.
Use HOME to restore the system volume to the maximum.
Now press TAB 3 times to get to the "wave volume up
down slider". You can use the arrow keys to increase
and decrease the volume. You can use PAGE UP and
PAGE DOWN to increase and decrease the volume in
    larger increments.

In Microsoft Windows NT, once you have installed JFW 3.31,
JFW 3.0 will no longer function. If you want to go back to
JFW 3.0, you must first uninstall JFW 3.31 and
    then reinstall JFW 3.0.
To uninstall JFW 3.31, follow these steps:
Press CTRL+ESC to open the Start menu.
Press P for Programs. If more than one item begins with
the letter P, then you must press ENTER on the menu item.
Press J for JFW331. Press U for Uninstall JFW.
    Follow the uninstall instructions.

When installing JFW in Microsoft Windows NT, if you are
using a Remote Software package such as PC Anywhere or
Remotely Possible, you must first uninstall
(not just close) it before installing JFW. JFW will
not install properly if a remote package is already
installed. Once you have installed JFW, you will be
able to reinstall your remote access program.

When installing JFW on a dual boot system where one of
the operating systems is Microsoft Windows NT, you must
first install under Windows NT. After installing under
Windows NT, you can reboot into Microsoft Windows 95 or 98
and reinstall JFW with the same options. Installing JFW
in this order will help you avoid authorization conflicts.

In Windows 95, you may notice that you have to press
the ALT key twice to activate the menu bar in the JAWS
application window. This is not a JFW-specific problem.
It is an anomaly in the operating system that appears to
affect 32-bit applications that have a fixed size.

If you shut down and restart JFW without restarting other
applications that are already running, you may notice that
JFW intermittently will not read dialogs and other items.
It is recommended that you reload other applications if
    you encounter this problem.

In Excel, users have noted that occasionally the
configuration files do not load properly. If you notice
that cells are not being read, and JFW does not seem
to know what cell you are in, simply TAB away and back
to Excel. This will cause the configuration files to
reload and the problem should go away. If you have a
consistent problem with this, please contact
    Henter-Joyce, Inc. technical support.

Escaping [with the ESC key] from messages when using
Internet Mail and software synthesizers causes an Illegal
Operation intermittently. You can use ALT+F4 to exit an
e-mail message, but pressing ALT+F4 in the inbox will
    exit Internet Mail.

You may not be able to hear wave file when using a
software synthesizer if Typing Echo is not turned off.
Even when "Allow wave files with software synthesizers"
is checked in Configuration Manager, the speech that
accompanies a keystroke will frequently keep the wave
file from playing. To turn off Typing Echo, do the
    following:
Press INSERT+F2 to open the Run JAWS Manager dialog.
Select Configuration Manager from the list and press ENTER.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to open the default configuration file.
Press ALT+S to open the Set Options Menu.
Select User Options from the menu and press ENTER.
Select Off in the Typing Echo radio button group.
Press CTRL+S to save the changes.
Press ALT+F4 to close the Configuration Manager.

When using the English-only version of JFW and
allowing JFW to handle punctuation, if you change
to a non-English synthesizer language the English
word for the punctuation will be spoken. To correct
this problem set punctuation to None, causing the
punctuation to be passed on to the synthesizer where
it will be handled in accordance with the selected
    language.

    Follow these steps:
Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS Application Window.
Press ALT+V, G to open the Global Voice Settings dialog.
Press ALT+U to set focus to the Punctuation combo box.
Press N to set punctuation to None.
Press ENTER to save the change.
Punctuation will now be handled by the synthesizer.

In Microsoft Windows NT, when changing video cards after
JFW is already installed, you must run Dr. JAWS so that
JFW can be configured for the new video card. You can find
a "Run Dr. JAWS" menu item in the Start Menu (CTRL+ESC)
    under the Programs, JFW folder.

In Microsoft Windows NT, JFW will only run with 256 colors.
If your system is not already configured for 256 colors,
consult your computer manufacturer's documentation for
details on changing your color setting.

When using JFW in a "Full-Screen DOS session," JFW will read
incorrect information or will appear to loose information
that is displayed on the screen. When using a DOS session,
the session must be in a windowed mode. If a DOS session has
a window title, then it is in a windowed mode. The keystroke
ALT+ENTER will toggle between these modes.

Many users like to add a link for JFW under their Windows
Startup group. If the Startup group has a JFW link, then
JFW will start automatically after Windows is loaded.
If JFW is in your Startup group, then you should remove
    it before installing JFW 3.31.

To remove an old JFW link from your Startup group,
    follow these steps:
Press CTRL+ESC to open the Start Menu.
Press S to open the Settings Menu.
Press T to open the Taskbar Properties multi-page dialog.
Press CTRL+TAB to open the Start Programs page.
Press ALT+R to activate the Remove button.
Select Startup from the list of folders and Press RIGHT
    ARROW to expand it.
Select the old JFW link from within the Startup folder
and press DELETE to remove it.

    JFW and Dragon
New JFW scripts and Dragon macros have been developed
for using JAWS for Windows with Dragon Naturally Speaking
and Dragon Dictate. These beta scripts are available for
download from our web site at:
    http://www.hj.com/jfw/scripts/jfwbetascripts.html
Two additional changes need to be in the JAWS Configuration
    Manager and are described below.
For users who want or need hands-free operation, the
addition of these files and changes to the default
configuration of JFW should allow you to use the power of both
programs together. We are not yet aware of any serious
shortcomings. However, our testing has been limited, and
one should realize that some customizing of JFW or Dragon
Dictate may be necessary to overcome certain situations.
Creating dragon voice macros to perform various JFW commands
or functions will make the operation more convenient.

If you are using Dictation products you should change the
following 2 settings in the JFW Configuration Manager:
    1. Use Standard Keyboard Processing
Press INSERT+F2 to open the Run JAWS Manager dialog.
Select Configuration Manager from the list and press ENTER.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to open the default configuration file.
Press ALT+S to open the Set Options Menu.
Select Keyboard Options from the menu and press ENTER.
Press CTRL+TAB to switch to the General Page.
TAB forward to the Check Box for Use Standard Keyboard
       Processing.
Press SPACEBAR to check this box.
Press ENTER to close the dialog and return to the
       Configuration Manager.

    2. Use Sticky Insert Key Mode
While still in the Configuration Manager with the
       DEFAULT.JCF file loaded:
Press ALT+S to open the Set Options Menu.
Press U for the User Options Dialog.
TAB forward to the Check Box for Insert Key Mode
Press SPACEBAR to check this box.
Press enter to close the dialog and return to the
Configuration Manager. Now press CTRL+S to save the
two changes you have made and Alt+F4 to exit the
       Configuration Manager.

Note that Training Naturally Speaking during the initial
installation is very difficult if you cannot see the text
on the screen. If you are a good braille reader then you
may be able to braille the text and read it out loud to
train the voice recognition system. However, people using
this technic have found varying results.

When using JFW with a terminal emulation, the cursor may
not be tracked satisfactorily. To improve cursor tracking
when using terminal emulation, it is recommended that you
set the caret timeout from the default value of 250 to 750.
Make sure you set it in the emulation configuration file
so that other applications are not affected.
To do this, do the following:
    Open your terminal emulation application.
Start the Configuration Manager (INSERT+F2, C).
The configuration file for the emulation package will
automatically be opened. Open the Cursor Options dialog
(ALT+S for set options and the C for Cursor Options).
TAB to the Caret Detect Time Out edit.
    Set the value to 750.
Press ENTER to accept the changes and close the dialog.
Press CTRL+S to save the emulator's configuration file.
Press ALT+F4 to close the Configuration Manager.

End of file.
